Brian Cheney to Present Recital Dedicated to ‘Leonard Bernstein’

By David Salazar

Tenor Brian Cheney will continue his online concert series on March 4, 2021 with a showcase dedicated to the music of American composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein.

Cheney will perform alongside pianist Cathy Venable, who has accompanied the tenor over the last 10 months. This will be the 19th concert the duo does together since April 2020 and the 29th overall for Cheney.

The concert will include music from such noted works as “West Side Story,” “On the Town,” “Wonderful Town,” “Candide,” and “Mass.”

“I view Leonard Bernstein as my musical grandfather,” Cheney told OperaWire. “He made a deal with his protégé and my mentor, Jerry Hadley in the 1980s. He asked Jerry, once he was at the height of his career, to find an artist he truly believed in and to mentor that artist as Bernstein did for him. A big part of my mentor/protégé relationship with Jerry Hadley was learning to truly find my own voice as an artist which was precisely his work with Bernstein. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to be a part of this great lineage. What I learned from Jerry about how to sing Lenny’s music came straight from the source and I will always cherish this gift.”

Cheney was hailed by KUSC Los Angeles as the “next great tenor” and has been one of the champions of the online recital since April, when he has offered showcased a diverse array of music from Broadway tunes to Bel Canto classics, to French arias, among many others.

Venable is an associate conductor and pianist, has worked with several opera companies, and has performed in numerous Broadway pits.
