The Bregenz Festival in Austria has canceled its production of Rossini’s “L’Italiana in Algeri.”

The new production by Brigitte Fassbaender, was set to open on August 16  but was canceled after a member of the ensemble received a positive COVID test. The production was scheduled to be performed four times through August 21.  According to early reports, the person who contracted the virus was double-vaccinated. Festival director Elisabeth Sobotka called the decision “very painful.”

The production was set to star Spencer Britten, Maria Barakova, and Alberto Comes.

Audiences will be able to get a refund on their tickets until Sept. 30, 2021 and audience members will also have the option to donate their ticket.

The Bregenz Festival runs through August 22 with performances of “Rigoletto” currently underway.
