Breaking: Angela Gheorghiu Cancels ‘Tosca,’ Martina Serafin To Perform Alongside Jonas Kaufmann Instead

By Francisco Salazar

Angela Gheorghiu has canceled the live stream performance of Puccini’s “Tosca” on May 8, 2017.

The Vienna State Opera has announced that Gheorghiu is sick for tomorrow night’s performance which was scheduled to be seen all over the world on the company’s live stream. The stream is free for all viewers courtesy of OMV.

It was to have reunited Jonas Kaufmann and Gheorghiu after a run last season of the opera in Vienna during which Gheorghiu famously forgot to come after Kaufmann encored “E Luce Van le Stelle.”

As a result, Martina Serafin will take over the title role for Sunday’s performance.  The soprano recently sang in a new production of Rimsky-Korsakov’s “The Snow Maiden” and is set to sing the title role of Puccini’s “Turandot” at the Metropolitan Opera and San Francisco Opera next season.

Gheorghiu is next scheduled to perform “Tosca” in Japan and “Adriana Lecouvreur” in Palermo before heading to London and Hamburg for more “Tosca.”

Kaufmann is still scheduled to perform the role of Mario Cavaradossi alongside bass-baritone Marco Vratogna, who will interpret Scarpia.
