Brandie Sutton & Orson Van Gay II Lead Phoenicia International Festival Of The Voice’s 2019 Season

Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice will soon celebrate its 10th anniversary season with “musical gems that honor African American culture and talent,” according to the press release.

The Festival will kick off with “10 Year Gala, Decade of Opera Favorites,” featuring sopranos Nancy Allen Lundy and Michelle Jennings, tenors Anthony Laciura and Barry Banks, bass-baritone Kyle Albertson, bass Morris Robinson, and throat singer Robert McClaughlin-Tuvan. They will be joined by pianist Douglas Martin and the Phoenicia Festival of the Voice Chorus and Orchestra, led by David Wroe. They will perform favorite arias from operas including “Madama Butterfly,” “Carmen,” “Il Barbiere di Siviglia,” and “La Boheme.”

Performance Date: Aug. 2, 2019

Lady Parts, Music of the Abolition Movement” will, according to the company’s website, “explore the role of abolitionists, the struggle for racial equality, and secret meanings for escaping slaves in the musical form of the spiritual.” Featured performers will include sopranos Tonna Miller, Phyllis Whitehouse, and Catherine Thorpe, and mezzo-soprano Agueda Fernandez-Abad.

The biographical play “Souvenir,” which tells the story of “dissonant diva Florance Foster Jenkins, an amateur operatic soprano,” will star Liz McCartney as Jenkins and Bob Stillman as Cosme McMoon.

Music of the African Diaspora” will explore music and concepts of Nigeria, Sudan, Egypt, South Africa, Cuba, the U.K., and the U.S. Carey Harrison and pianist Justin Kolb will present “a shower of complex rhythms, with sonics ranging from familiar jazz ‘licks’ to mind-bending melodies with traditional and some ‘out there’ harmonics.” These will be interlaced with prose written by Harrison, with additional words by Langston Hughes.

Excerpts from Scott Joplin’s opera “Treemonisha” will feature music “reimagined and restructured” by Damien Sneed. The cast will feature Brandie Sutton in the title role, alongside Djoré Nance as Ned, Norman Shankle as Remus, Geraldine McMillan as Monisha, Daniel Rich as Zodzetrick, Parson Alltalk as Luddud, Edward Washington-Cephus as Andy, and Alicia Stoks as Lucy.

Performance Date: Aug. 3, 2019

Maria Todaro will direct a new production of Donizetti’s “L’Elisir d’Amore,” set in a remote Ghanian village. The cast will include Jasmine Habersham as Adina, Orson van Gay II as Nemorino, Lawrence Craig as Dr. Dulcamara and, Leroy Davis as Sgt. Belcore. They will be joined by the African-American members of the Phoenicia Festival Chorus. David Wroe will conduct.

Master Program students of Paul Green Rock Academy will perform in celebration of the original 1970 recording of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical “Jesus Christ Superstar.”

Performance Date: Aug. 4, 2019

The Festival will conclude with “Closing Gala, Celebration of Talent-Rich Catskills” highlighting local talents including Loren Daniels, Robert Warren, Harvey Boyer and his children’s chorus, the Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice Chorus, and the Woodstock Rock Academy. A dance party, led by DJ Skoob E, will follow.
