Boston Lyric Opera to World Premiere ‘The Seasons’ with Anthony Roth Costanzo

By Francisco Salazar

Boston Lyric Opera is set to the world premiere of “The Seasons,” a groundbreaking new opera that marries Antonio Vivaldi’s music to a fresh and timely new story.

A BLO co-production with AMOC and SCENE, and co-presented with ArtsEmerson, the work features a libretto by Sarah Ruhl, and imagines artists seeking inspiration in a world where the weather has been turned upside down.

The work was co-conceived by Anthony Roth Costanzo and will be directed by Zack Winokur. Boston Early Music Festival Artistic Director Stephen Stubbs will conduct the new work while Pam Tanowitz will choreograph it.

The cast will include Brandon Cedel, Ashley Emerson, Kangmin Justin Kim, Whitney Morrison, and Alexis Peart.

In a statement, Costanzo said he was inspired by the “incredible arias from rarely performed Vivaldi operas, and thinking about how to weave the narrative and emotions they depict into a new story.”

The opera will be presented at the Emerson Paramount Center from March 12 to 16, 2025.
