Boos Erupt at Royal Opera & Ballet’s ‘Turandot’ After Tenor Cancels Third Act & ‘Nessun Dorma’ is Omitted

On Tuesday Jan. 27, the Royal Opera and Ballet experienced one of the most dramatic scenes in opera history.

After the second act of “Turandot,” tenor Roberto Alagna fell ill and was forced to cancel the rest of the evening.

Having no cover, the company was forced to call in Richard Hetherington, the theatre’s head of music. He omitted the famed “Nessun Dorma” and continued the show with Hetherington singing from the wings and while the show’s choreologist, Tatiana Novaes Coelho, covered his steps in costume.

According to the Times of London, audience members were not so happy and booed due to the lack of “Nessun Dorma,” the opera’s most famous aria.

The company was forced to send an email to audience members on Wednesday, explaining the situation and offered them 50 percent of their ticket price in credit.
