Bolshoi Theatre to Open New ‘Tosca’ Production

By Francisco Salazar

On April 21 the Bolshoi Theatre is set to open its new production of Puccini’s “Tosca.”

The new production will be directed by Stefano Poda and marks the first time in seven years that the Russian Opera house presents Puccini’s dramatic work.

Poda will act as the productions director, costume designer and lighting designer and said in a press release that the Bolshoi is one of the “only places in the world to have specialists of such a level who combine the highest artistic culture, knowledge, and unique skills — the skill of creating fabric textures, costumes, and decorations, practically lost today, which he needs to implement his idea.”

Italian conductor Daniele Callegari will lead the orchestra while the chorus will be led by Valery Borisov. The opera will star Dinara Alieva in the title role and Elchin Azizov as Scarpia among others.

“Tosca” opens on April 21 and runs through June 13, 2021.
