Blythe Gaissert & Sara Gartland To Star in San Diego Opera’s ‘Hansel and Gretel’

San Diego Opera is set to present “Hansel and Gretel” this February.

The opera will run for four performances between Feb. 8-16 with mezzo-soprano Blythe Gaissert as Hansel and soprano Sara Gartland as Gretel. Gaissert appeared with the company in 2017’s “As One,” while Gartland was Musetta in the company’s 2015 production of “La Bohème.”

Baritone Malcolm MacKenzie will appear as the Father; he was in the company’s 2015 “La Bohème.” As the Witch, audiences will get a chance to see tenor Joel Sorensen; he appeared as Pong in the 2018 production of “Turandot.”

Other cast members include Marcy Stonikas as the Mother and Devon Guthrie as the Dew Fairy / Sandman; they will both be making their company debuts in this production.

Ari Pelto will conduct (also in his company debut) with Brenna Conner directing the opera. Costumes and sets will be designed by Old Trout Puppet Workshop with Thomas C. Hase as lighting designer.
