Black Opera Productions to Present ‘Jessye Norman at 75: A Celebration’ Virtual Gala

Black Opera Productions has announced a virtual gala aimed at celebrating the career of Jessye Norman.

Entitled “Jessye Norman at 75: A Celebration,” will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2020 at 6 p.m. ET. The program will feature virtual dedication from around the country with performances filmed at the Winter Garden at Brookfield Place.

The program will be hosted by baritone Kenneth Overton and will feature Laverne Cox, Anna Deavere, Richard Smallwood, Judith Jamison, Darren Walker, Alicia Hall Moran, Harolyn Blackwell, Richard Danielpour, and Mark Markham as guest speakers.  There will also be anecdotes and other reflections from her siblings Elaine Norman Sturkey and James Howard Norman.

There will also be performances from such artists as J’Nai Bridges, Measha Brueggergosman, Karen Slack, Russell Thomas, Chauncey Packer, Krysty Swann, Audrey DuBois-Harris, Sidney Outlaw, Brandie Sutton, Justin Austin, and Laquita Mitchell, with pianists Mary Pinto, Kevin Miller, Myra Huang, and Audra Clark, and appearances by such opera legends as Martina Arroyo, Grace Bumbry, George Shirley, Simon Estes, and Damien Sneed. The event is free with a suggested donation of $35.
