Birmingham Opera to Stage ‘Das Rheingold’ at Industrial Site

By Logan Martell

Birmingham Opera has announced it will be staging a 2021 production of Wagner’s “Das Rheingold,” featuring an international cast and local volunteer performers led by Artistic Director Graham Vick and new Music Director Alpesh Chauhan.

The performance, which comes in partnership with Urban Splash, will be held at The Tubeworks on Icknield Port Loop, a disused metalworks which is set to be later transformed as part of a new urban development plan.

The cast includes Eric Greene as Wotan, Brenden Gunnell as Loge, Chrystal E. Williams as Fricka, Francesca Chiejina as Freia, Amar Mahhala as Froh, Byron Jackson as Donner, Gweneth-Ann Rand as Erda, Ross Romgobin as Alberich, Keel Watson as Fasolt, and Andrew Slater as Fafner.

“I’m very excited that 30 years on from The Ring Saga we can now plan full-scale Wagner in Birmingham – and cast Gods, Dwarves and Giants largely from the diverse group of singers whom we have been nurturing,” writes Vick. “This revolutionary political satire is also a great showpiece for our new Music Director and for the marvelous CBSO. From the murky depths of the unconscious to self-serving promises of castles in the air and the voice of a planet facing its own destruction – it could’ve been written now.”
