Bilbao Opera Cancels ‘Samson et Dalila’

By Francisco Salazar

The Bilbao Opera has canceled its upcoming production of Saint-Saëns’ “Samson et Dalila.”

The production, which was set to be performed on Jan. 23, 26, 29, and Feb. 1, 2021, was canceled due to restrictions by the Spanish government due to the continued spread of COVID-19.

According to a statement made by the company, performing for 18 percent of capacity combined with the restrictions and the curfews makes it impossible to continue planning the production.

The Bilbao Opera also noted that rehearsals would need to begin at the end of December, which are currently impossible due to COVID-19.

The Bilbao Opera has already canceled seven productions this past year and is the latest theater to cancel a January production following theaters in Germany and Switzerland. The theater recently canceled its production of “Alzira” and moved it to a future season.
