Beth Morrison Projects’ “BMP: NEXT GEN” is set to return for its final round on June 23 and 24, 2022.

The event will feature composers Elizabeth Gartman and Niloufar Nourkbakhsh showcasing two 30-minute chamber operas. At the end of the competition, one of them will be announced as the winner and will be commissioned for a full-length opera by Beth Morrison Projects.

Gartman will showcase “It is a Comfort to Know.” The work, which was written by librettist Susan Bywaters, will be directed by Madeline Whitesell and tells the story of the “leader of a death cult and their followers as they anticipate end of days.”

Meanwhile, Nourkbakhsh will present “Threshold of Brightness.” Written by Lisa Flanagan and directed by Shadi Ghaheri, the work follows controversial Iranian poet Forough Farrokhzad “as she is seriously injured in a car crash and enters a dream-like state where she reckons with the ghosts of her past.”
