Berkshire Opera Festival to Present ‘Once Upon an Opera’

By David Salazar

The Berkshire Opera Festival (BOF) will present “Once Upon an Opera,” a free interactive family concert, on April 12 at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.

The one-hour program features soprano Juliet Schlefer, mezzo-soprano Abbegael Greene and tenor Maximillian Jansen in a selection of well-known operatic melodies by Gounod, Verdi, Mozart and Offenbach. The script is by Luca Antonucci, BOF’s Artistic Coordinator, Assistant Conductor and Chorus Master.

Pianist Charles Tsui and narrator Sarah Prouty, BOF’s Community Engagement Officer, round out the program.

Schlefer is a 2025 Young Concert Artists semi-finalist and first-place winner of the Musicians Club of Women competition, with festival appearances at Tanglewood, Toronto Summer Music and New Music on the Point. Greene, a graduate of the Bard College Conservatory Graduate Vocal Arts Program, previously appeared with BOF as Marthe Schwerlein in “Faust.” Jansen recently sang Gastone in BOF’s production of “La Traviata” and has performed with Opera Saratoga and the New York Choral Society.

The performance will kick off at 2 p.m.
