Bayreuth Announces Cast Change for ‘Der fliegende Holländer’

The Bayreuth Festival has announced a cast change for its production of “Der fliegende Holländer.”

The company noted, that “due to the severity of personal problems, John Lundgren, unfortunately, finds himself unable to perform the title role. As a result, he “asked the Festival management to release him from the role.”

The Bayreuth Festival has complied with his request.

The role will now be performed by Thomas J. Mayer, who has sung in Bayreuth since 2012 in productions of “Lohengrin,” “Parsifal,” and “Siegfried.”

He has also sung at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro alla Scala, Oper Koln, Bayerische Staatsoper, and Salzburg Festival.

Oksana Lyniv conducts the production by Dmitri Tcherniakov which will also star Georg Zeppenfeld, Elisabeth Teige, Eric Cutler, Nadine Weissmann, and Attilio Glaser.

“Der fliegende Holländer” opens on August 6 and runs through August 26, 2022.
