Bayerische Staatsoper Announces Cast Change for ‘Tannhäuser’

By Dejan Vukosavljevic

The Bayerische Staatsoper has announced that baritone Christian Gerhaher will not be singing the role of Wolfram von Eschenbach for the performance of Wagner’s “Tannhäuser” on July 11, 2021.

As a result, Sir Simon Keenlyside will take over the role.  The company also announced that Elena Pankratova will replace Daniela Sindram in the role of Venus.

Keenlyside recently performed at the Teatro alla Scala in “Le Nozze di Figaro” and is set to reprise his acclaimed “Macbeth” in Munich. Meanwhile, Pankratova will perform at the Arena di Verona in a production of “Turandot.”

Keenlyside and Pankratova join a cast that includes Lise Davidsen as Elisabeth, Georg Zeppenfeld as Hermann, Landgraf von Thüringen, and Klaus Florian Vogt in the title role. Asher Fisch conducts a production by Romeo Castellucci.
