Bayerische Staatsoper Announces Cast Change for ‘Hamlet’

The Bayerische Staatsoper has announced cast changes for its production of Brett Dean’s “Hamlet” on July 12, 2023.

The company said that bass Joshua Bloom is replacing Sir John Tomlinson in the role of The Ghost of Old Hamlet/Player King/Gravedigger while David Butt Philip will replace Allan Clayton in the title role.

Bloom previously sang the roles in a new production at Oper Köln. He has performed with the English National Opera, Royal Opera House, Welsh National Opera, Opéra de Lille, Komische Oper Berlin, and Opéra National de Paris, among others. Meanwhile, Butt Philip has performed at the Royal Opera House, Deutsche Oper Berlin, English National Opera, Opera Holland Park, and Washington National Opera.

They join a cast that includes Caroline Wettergreen, Rod Gilfry, Sophie Koch, Charles Workman, Jacques Imbrailo, and Sean Panikkar. Vladimir Jurowski conducts the production by Neil Armfield.
