By Francisco Salazar

The Bayerische Staatsoper has announced a cast change for its performance of “Die Frau ohne Schatten” on July 31.

The company announced that Nina Stemme fell ill and as a result, will be replaced by Miina-Liisa Värelä. Due to short notice, the company had to postpone the performance a few hours in order to allow Värelä to arrive in Munich. As result, the final performance of the season will begin at 7 p.m.

Värelä is a well-regarded Finnish soprano who has performed at the Finnish National Opera, Theater Bremen, and Savonlinna Opera Festival. Her repertoire includes the music of Wagner and Strauss.

The soprano joins a cast that includes Eric Cutler, Camilla Nylund, Michaela Schuster, Bogdan Baciu, Evan LeRoy Johnson, and Michael Volle. Sebastian Weigle conducts the production by Krzysztof Warlikowski.
