Barbara Hannigan & Pumeza Matshikiza Headline Top 5 Holiday International Weekend (12/27-29)

This weekend the holiday season continues with a lot of theaters are showcasing fairy tales. For this weekend we look at some rarely performed works in new productions.

Rusalka – Trioler Festspiele Erl, Austria

Alexander Prior conducts of a new production of Dvorak’s masterwork by Florentine Klepper. The production is set to star Karen Vuong in the title role and Gerard Schneider as the prince. Thomas Faulkner, Dshamilja Kaiser, Judita Nagyová, Steven LaBrie in his European debut, and Corinna Scheurle round out the cast.

Rusalka – Opera Vlaanderen, Belgium

In Belgium, “Rusalka” also gets a star-studded cast that includes Pumeza Matshikiza and Tineke Van Ingelgem sharing the title role. They are joined by Kyungho Kim and Mykhailo Malafii alternating as the Prince, Goderdzi Janelidze, Maria Riccarda Wesseling, Karen Vermeiren, Daniel Arnaldos, Raphaële Green, and Justin Hopkins. Giedrė Šlekytė conducts.

Cendrillon – Theater Ulm, Germany

I Chiao Shih stars in the title role of Massenet’s rarely performed work with Christianne Bélanger, Luke Sinclair, Maryna Zubko, and Maria Rosendorfsky. Michael Weiger conducts the production by  Christian von Götz.

The Snow Queen – Bayerische Staatsoper, Germany

Hans Abrahamsen’s new opera continues its run in Munich with Cornelius Meister conducting the new production by Andreas Kriegenburg. The modern work stars Barbara Hannigan, Rachael Wilson, Thomas Gräßle, Katarina Dalayman, Peter Rose, Caroline Wettergreen, Dean Power, Kevin Conners, and Owen Willetts.

La Belle Helene – Opera de Lausanne – Switzerland

Offenbach’s opera gets a new production starring Michel Fau, Julie Robard-Gendre in the title role, Julien Dran, Christophe Lacassagne, Jean-Claude Sarragosse, Jean-Francis Monvoisin, Pier-Yves Têtu, Hoël Troadec, Paul Figuier, Marie Daher, Laurène Paternò, Béatrice Nani, and Richard Lahady. Pierre Dumoussaud conducts the production by Michel Fau.
