Bampton Classical Opera Announces ‘Feliz Navidad! – Christmas Music from the New World’

Bampton Classical Opera has announced its 2023 Christmas Concert “Feliz Navidad! – Christmas Music from the New World.”

The event, which is scheduled for Dec. 19, 2023 at St. Mary’s Church in Bampton, Oxfordshire, will feature Juan Guitérrez de Padilla’s “Missa Joseph Fili” as well as music by Antonio de Salazar, Francisco López Capillas, Manuel de Zumaya, Francisco Guerrero, Tomás Luis de Victoria, Padilla, Juana Inés de la Cruz, Sebastián de Vivanco, Juan García de Zespedes, and Gaspar Fernandes. Among the included works are “Cui luna, sol et omnia, Sancta Maria, La Bella incorrupta,” “Xicochi, xicochi,” and “Convidando está noche.”

Per the official press statement, “For their annual concert in commemoration of the village’s patron Saint, Beornwald, Bampton Classical Opera presents a festive programme exploring the remarkable musical life of the New World during the seventeenth century, at the height of the Spanish Golden Age.”

Audiences will hear Bampton Classical Voices under the musical direction of Andrew Griffiths.
