BAM Cancels Collaboration With Metropolitan Opera on Missy Mazzoli’s ‘Breaking the Waves’

By Francisco Salazar

The Metropolitan Opera collaboration with the Brooklyn Academy of Music on Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek’s “Breaking the Waves” has been canceled.

The opera, which was scheduled to be performed on June 23- 30, 2020, featured a cast comprised of Sydney Mancasola as Bess McNeill, Wallis Giunta as Dodo, and Duncan Rock as Jan.

“Breaking the Waves” would have featured conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin leading the Metropolitan Opera orchestra and the chorus of the Scottish Opera with Tom Morris directing the production.

What was perhaps most important about these performances was the fact that they marked the first opera collaboration between the Metropolitan Opera and BAM after it was announced in 2018 that these two organizations would work together at some point in the near future. It was to be a major new project for the Metropolitan Opera as it seeks to engage with new audiences in new environments and contexts. There has not been any mention of whether these performances might be postponed for a latter date or season or what comes next for the Met and BAM in their collaboration.

“Breaking the Waves” will be performed next season at the Houston Grand Opera and the LA Opera.
