The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has announced a three-year contract extension for Jonathon Heyward, Music Director and Harvey M. and Lyn P. Meyerhoff Chair.

Under the new agreement, Heyward, the youngest and first Black music director in the orchestra’s 108-year history, will remain with the organization through the 2030–31 season.

Heyward, who is among TIME Magazine’s Next Generation Leaders and Bloomberg’s Ones to Watch,  began his tenure in the 2023–24 season and has overseen a 58 percent rise in overall attendance. His leadership has also inspired major philanthropy, including his own $125,000 donation over six years beginning in the 2026–27 Season, dedicated to supporting emerging artists and educational programs.

He has also launched composer mentorships, expanded youth orchestra programs, and created new collaborations with regional schools and universities, including the University of Maryland’s Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center and School of Music. This fall, he is set to become the first BSO Music Director in a decade to lead the orchestra’s Midweek Education and Family Concerts on Oct. 30 and Nov. 1.

Moreover, he has welcomed new artistic talent including Assistant Conductor Jiannan Cheng and Conducting Fellow Tatiana Pérez-Hernández.

“I am deeply honored to continue my journey with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra,” said Jonathon Heyward, per an official press release. “This orchestra is not only world-class on stage but is a true reflection of the people we proudly serve. I’m fortunate to witness over the past seasons, the shared vision of growth and connection across our entire organization, from our musicians and staff to our partners and audiences. I’m thrilled to continue building together and I am excited for what lies ahead.”

In addition to his position at BSO, Heywward is also the Renée and Robert Belfer Music Director of the Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center.
