Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe Announces 2021-22 Season

The Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe in Germany has announced its 2021-22 season featuring ballet, theater, and opera.

For this article, we will only highlight the opera productions.

Premieres

Mozart’s “La Finta Giardiniera” will get a new production with Yura Yang conducting and Anja Kühnhold directing.

Premiere Date: Oct. 23, 2021

Emmerich Kálmán’s “Grafin Mariza” gets a new production with Georg Fritzsch conducting and Alexandra Frankmann directing.

Premiere Date: Dec. 11, 2021

Johannes Willig conducts Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale” in a new production by Valentin Schwarz.

Premiere Date: Jan. 22, 2022

Handel’s “Hercules” will be performed in a production by Floris Visser. Lars Ulrik Mortensen conducts the opera starring Ann Hallenberg, Brandon Cedel, Lauren Lodge-Campbell, and Moritz Kallenberg.

Premiere Date: Feb. 18, 2022

Yura Yang conducts a new production of Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” with Martin G. Berger directing.

Premiere Date: March 26, 2022

Sláva Daubnerová directs a new production of R. Strauss’ “Salome” with Georg Fritsch conducting.

Premiere Date: May 14, 2022

Johannes Willig conducts Verdi’s “Aida” in a new production by Jasmina Hadžiahmetović.

Premiere Date: June 26, 2022

International Handel Festival

Handel’s “Hercules” will be performed in a production by Floris Visser. Lars Ulrik Mortensen conducts the opera starring Ann Hallenberg, Brandon Cedel, Lauren Lodge-Campbell, and Moritz Kallenberg.

Performance Dates: Feb. 18-March 1, 2022

Federico Maria Sardelli conducts Georg Friedrich Händel’s “Tolomeo Re d’Egitto.” The production will star Cameron Shahbazi, Louise Kemény, Eléonore Pancrazi, Meili Li, and Morgan Pearse.

Performance Dates: Feb. 25-March 2, 2022

The festival will include a gala concert and solo concerts.

Revivals 

Auf Den Flugeln des Gesangs will feature choruses from Christoph W. Gluck, Giuseppe Verdi, Gaetano Donizetti, Giacomo Puccini, Jacques Offenbach, Charles Gounod, Johann Strauss, Franz Lehár and Richard Wagner. Ulrich Wagner conducts Anja Kühnhold’s production.

Premiere date: Sept. 19, 2021

The company will present R. Strauss’ Prelude to “Ariadne auf Naxos” and Hans Werner Henze’s “Das Wundertheater” as a double bill. Georg Fritzsch conducts.

Johannes Willig conducts Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi”

Premiere Date: Oct. 31, 2021

Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” will be conducted by Yura Yang.

Premiere Date: Nov. 4, 2021

Ulrich Wagner conducts “Viva La Diva” featuring chorus scenes from “Carmen” and “The Flying Dutchman.”

Premiere Date: Nov. 20, 2021

Frederick Loewe & Alan J. Lerner’s “My Fair Lady” returns to the stage with Uklrich Wagner leading the musical performance.

Premiere Date: Dec. 18, 2021
