Austrian Theaters Shut Down Until March

By Dejan Vukosavljevic

The Wiener Staatsoper, Theater an der Wien, Volksoper Wien, and Oper Graz have all announced their respective closures until at least Feb. 28, 2021.

The announcements came as a result of a decision by Austrian federal authorities to extend the closure of cultural venues until at least Feb. 28, 2021. The Austrian federal government will reassess the situation regarding the reopening of cultural venues in mid-February.

Austria is the latest of several countries to extend its hard lockdown, following similar measures in Germany and France. In Germany, some opera houses have not only extended the shutdowns of their theaters but also canceled major portions of their 2020-21 seasons.

The Semperoper Dresden recently announced its intentions to shut down until April and relaunch a new season between April and July.
