Austrian Government Establishes 90 Million Euro Fund for Freelance Artists

By Logan Martell

The Austrian government has announced an emergency fund of 90 million euros to support freelancing and self-employed artists over the next few months.

This fund will provide an estimated 15 thousand artists with 1,000 euros for six months.

“We are acknowledging that the disruption of cultural life will last more than just one or two months,” Culture Minister and Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler says.

The fund was opened by the new Secretary of State for Cultural Affairs, Andrea Mayr. The government has expressed its desire to aid larger cultural institutions, with Finance Minister Gernot Bluemel planning to allocate 25 million euros to cover the losses of film productions which were cancelled due to the coronavirus.
