Austria Diplomats Advocate for Paata Burchuladze, Following Discovery of Austrian Citizenship

By Francisco Salazar

The Austrian Foreign Ministry and Austrian Embassy in Tbilisi are working extensively to get Paata Burchuladze a fair trial in Georgia and providing intensive support for the bass.

According to the Salzburger Nachrichten, Burchuladze is also an Austrian citizen and as a result, Austrian diplomats are monitoring the legal proceedings.

However, their options are limited because under international law, it is not possible to lodge a direct legal challenge against the Georgian judicial system. While the Republic can provide consular support, demand adherence to the rule of law, and monitor the proceedings through diplomatic channels, it cannot directly influence the decisions of Georgian courts.

Burchuladze was arrested in October 2025  and was accused of inciting violent actions during an Oct. 4 protest in Tbilisi. The bass was among several prominent opposition figures, including the United National Movement (UNM) Murtaz Zodelava and Irakli Nadiradze, Strategy Aghmashenebeli leader Paata Manjgaladze, and Colonel Lasha Beridze. In May 2026 he was sentenced to seven years in prison for “attempted seizure or blockade of strategic and particularly important facilities, committed by a group,” “organization and leadership of group violence,” and “incitement to change the constitutional order of Georgia through violence.”

Burchuladze was a prominent bass in the opera world who performed at many of the great opera houses around the world including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera, and Wiener Staatsoper. He recently became a major political figure who established the Georgian Development Foundation, a civic movement that was expected to turn into a political party ahead of the scheduled October 2016 parliamentary election.
