Austria Closes Theaters Until End of June

By Francisco Salazar

A day after Chancellor Sebastian Kurz stated that small shops were slated to reopen April 13, with larger stores to follow on May 1, the Austrian leader also announced that theaters and big venues would remain closed until the end of June.

That decision will ultimately affect numerous companies. Among those that have already been impacted are the Salzburg Easter Fesival which announced it was canceling its 2020 season.

The decision will also alter the plans of the Musikverein and the Konzerthaus as well as the remainder of the Theater an der Wien and Wiener Staatsoper seasons. Among the productions that are unlikely to take the stage at the Staatsoper are “Lucia di Lammermoor,” “Il Trovatore,” “Falstaff,” “Nabucco,” “Aida,” “Le Nozze di Figaro,” and “Guillaume Tell,” among others.

Austria currently has 12,519 confirmed of the coronavirus with 243 deaths.
