Aural Compass Projects to Present Concert Celebrating African American Composers

By Chris Ruel

After a two-year delay because of the pandemic, Aural Compass Projects will present “Lift Every Voice,” a concert celebrating African American composers, at Trinity Center for Urban Life in Center City Philadelphia, on April 1, 2022.

The concert features music by Jacqueline Hairston, John Carter, Marcus Norris, Colin Lett, Undine Smith Moore, Margaret Bonds, Florence Price, H. Leslie Adams, and Wille Alexander. Artists slated to perform are soprano Meroë Khalia Adeeb, mezzo-soprano Taylor-Alexis DuPont, tenor Elliott Paige, and pianist collaborator Michael Lewis.

Michael Lewis, Founding Artistic Director of Aural Compass Projects, said in a press statement, “When we started programming the first performance of “Lift Every Voice” back in 2019, I wanted this to be a concert that would open up our audience to a world of composers they likely had never heard of. Since then, the music world has made significant strides in regards to diversity and representation, and several of these composers are getting more recognition than previously before. Despite that, I still believe there is a lot of work to be done for these composers to gain the recognition that they deserve.”

Taylor-Alexis DuPont added, “I feel this concert will just be a much needed balm for people in the world. The hope and beauty these composers bring will inspire anyone to continue to be a force for good in the world and persevere to have their voice heard.”

Aural Compass Projects is a musical arts organization dedicated to performing and promoting new and underperformed works. For more information about the concert, visit the Aural Compass Projects website.
