Atlanta Opera Connects With Community Through Singing Telegram Program

By David Salazar

The Atlanta Opera has launched a new program centered on connecting with the community via personal telegrams.

Members of the Atlanta Opera Studio will use a recording device or cell phone to perform a small musical piece (including a favorite song for the recipient) that will then be shown to those in senior living communities, hospitals, or other individuals who need support during this challenging time.

The program recently kicked off at the Lenbrook [Independent Senior Living] in Atlanta and is set to expand to a wide range of other locales. Among those expected to receive these recorded telegrams are doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers at Grady Health System.

“The Atlanta Opera Studio Artists were looking for ways to continue to use their voices to uplift during this tough time,” said Jessica Kiger, task force chair and Director of Community Engagement & Education, in a press release. “We’re excited about these micro-victories that create community and connect to our mission. It’s a very hopeful, personal program that should bring a little joy during a period of anxiety.”
