Asmik Grigorian to Sing ‘Turandot’ in 2024

By Francisco Salazar

Asmik Grigorian will sing the title role in Puccini’s “Turandot” in the coming seasons.

The soprano, who is currently starring in a revival of “Manon Lescaut” at the Wiener Staatsoper, told the Austrian press that she will likely sing “Turandot” in 2024 under Franz Welser-Möst.

The soprano could not reveal any details about the upcoming production but noted that she does not believe Turandot is a voice killer and said, “if you have the right conductor – and I think I have – then anything is possible. Franz Welser-Möst knows my voice well, also my limits. That’s perfect. Turandot has many colors and no role in the Italian repertoire is as dramatic as the roles in the German repertoire.”

The soprano also noted that Welser-Möst offered her the role of Tosca and while she wants to sing it she needs to find the right director for the opera.

Grigorian is scheduled to sing “Il Trittico” at teh Salzburg Festival this summer and is set to return to the Teatro alla Scala for “Pique Dame.” Her debut album is set to be released next month.
