Asmik Grigorian to Headline First-Ever Performance of ‘The Enchantress’ at Oper Frankfurt
By David SalazarOper Frankfurt is set to present the first-ever performance of Tchaikovsky’s “The Enchantress” on Dec. 4, 2022.
Headlining the new production will be soprano Asmik Grigorian as Natasia. She is joined by a cast starring Iain Macneil as the Prince, Claudia Mahnke as the Princess, alexander Mikhailov, Frederic Jose, Zanda Svede, and Bozidar Smiljanic, among others.
The opera, which Tchaikovsky considered his best, will be conducted by Valentin Uryupin and directed by Vasily Barkhatov.
The work premiered on Nov. 1, 1887 in Saint Petersburg and was poorly received. It tells the story of Natasia, a widow known as Kuma. News spreads that the Prince has fallen for her, drawing the ire of the Princess who plots revenge against Kuma, who is in fact in love with the Prince’s son. The Princess poisons and kills Kuma, drawing the rage of the Prince who murders his own son in vengeance.
The opera will run through Jan. 8, 2023.
