Arts Council England to Consider £24 Million in Support for English National Opera

By Chris Ruel

Arts Council England has set a budget of up to £24 million in funding to support English National Opera’s (ENO) transition to a new artistic and business model.

The funding is subject to approval and is intended for the 2024-26 period, with a decision on the application expected this summer.

ENO plans to establish a primary base outside London while still owning, managing, and hosting performances at the London Coliseum.

The potential funding aims to facilitate a phased transition to ENO’s new model, ensuring long-term sustainability and success while expanding its reach and impact on the national and international cultural scene. This strategic move also aims to position ENO to apply for inclusion in the Arts Council’s National Portfolio of funded organizations starting in 2026.

If approved, the funding would be in addition to the £11.46 million already agreed upon for 2023-24.
