Artist Of The Week: Scott Hendricks

American Baritone To World Premiere ‘Frankenstein’

By Francisco Salazar

Scott Hendricks is one of the most diverse artists in opera. His repertoire spans classic works by Monteverdi, Mozart, Debussy to contemporary works. He has also become one of the leading Verdi, Puccini, and Wagner interpreters around the world and has sung at every major theater to great acclaim. With an ever-increasing repertoire, this week Hendricks will have the honoring of creating a new opera.

The American baritone will take on the title role in Mark Grey’s “Frankenstein” based on the classic novel by Mary Shelley. It’s the first of two world premieres for the baritone this season as he will also sing the title role in Moritz Eggert’s “M – A City searches for a Murderer” at Komische Oper Berlin.

OperaWire recently named “Frankenstein” one of the Top 10 operas to see in 2019 and Hendricks is one of the reasons as he becomes the latest artist in the world to portray the complicated Victor Frankenstein. After his success at La Monnaie as Barnaba in “La Gioconda,” audiences are in for another brilliant portrayal.

If you can’t make it to the Komische or La Monnaie, Hendricks will portray “Rigoletto,” one of his signature roles, in a new production at the Bregenz Festival this summer.

Recordings

For those not  familiar with Hendricks’ voice, he is on a recording of “I Puritani” from the Dutch National Opera as well as another of “Il Trovatore” from La Monnaie.

Here is Hendricks as Scarpia at the San Francisco Opera.
