Armenian Soprano Makes Role Debut as Liu in Salerno

By Francisco Salazar

As the year winds down, the Teatro Verdi Salerno will open a production of Puccini’s “Turandot” to conclude the 2022 season. The production will include formidable interpreters of the work and will also feature a highly anticipated role debut.

Lianna Haroutounian will make her role debut as Liu after singing many of the great Puccini heroines in the repertory. To date, she has been acclaimed as Mimi in “La Bohème,” Cio-Cio-San in “Madama Butterfly,” Giorgetta in “Il Tabarro,” the title roles of “Manon Lescaut,” “Tosca,” and “Suor Angelica.”

Of her Puccini heroines, critics have raved, calling her a “superb actor” and noting that her interpretations are “deeply felt.”

Haroutounian, who has become well-known for her interpretations in the Verdi and verismo repertoire, is also set to perform Verdi’s Requiem later this season.

Recordings

For audiences not familiar with the soprano’s voice, you can hear her in two Royal Opera House recordings, “Il Trovatore” and “Les Vepres Siciliennes.”
