Artist Of The Week: Angela Brower
American Mezzo To Make South American Debut In Historical ‘Der Rosenkavalier’
By Francisco SalazarIts a big week for Colombian audiences. Strauss’ “Der Rosenkavalier” will make its Colombian premiere at the Teatro Mayor and not only is it being performed with some of the biggest European names in the world, it’s also be fully staged in a lavish traditional production. Among the many performers that will align for the premiere is Angela Brower, an American mezzo who is making a name for herself in Europe and is about to have a major breakout this fall when she returns to the USA.
Brower, who has previously sung the role of Octavian will be making her first appearances in Latin America and as she noted in her interview earlier with OperaWire, she is trying to make Octavian a signature role. She noted that she has previously performed the role a few times in productions in Austria and, most recently, at the Bayerische Staatsoper in the company’s classic production and at Carnegie Hall. When she performed the role in New York critics were ecstatic, noting Brower sang with “plush, full sound, yet also youthful brightness and flashes of cocky energy.” Now she has the duty of bringing the role to Colombian audiences for the first time ever, marking not only a historic evening but another major milestone for the young singer.
Once she finishes her run she heads to the USA for a major house and role debut as Idamante in Mozart’s “Idomeneo” at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Then she returns to Munich for “Così fan tutte” and “Norma.”

For those not familiar with Brower’s voice she can be heard in two Deutsche Grammophon recordings of “Così fan tutte” and “Le Nozze di Figaro.” She also be seen in the DVD of the Royal Opera’s “Così fan tutte” featuring Corinne Winters and Alessio Arduini.
