Ariana Maubach Wins Canadian Opera Company’s Ensemble Studio Competition
By David SalazarAriana Maubach has won the top prize in the Canadian Opera Company’s 11th annual Centre Stage: Ensemble Studio Competition.
“It’s always an inspiring experience to get a glimpse at some of Canada’s most promising up and coming opera voices,” said Canadian Opera Company General Director David Ferguson in an official press release. “Last night, for the third year in a row, audiences both in the opera house and at home via livestream were treated to moving performances by some of the top emerging talent, discovered during auditions conducted across the country.”
The mezzo-soprano performed “Cruda sorte” from Rossini’s “L’Italiana in Algeri,” taking home the top prize of $7,500 as well as the Audience Choice Prize and $1,000. Maubach is a second-year Resident Artist at the Academy of Vocal Arts.
Coming in second place following her performance of “Donde lieta uscì” was soprano Emma Pennell. The Ontario native takes home $5,000.
In third place came soprano Olivia LaPointe. She gets $2,500 following her rendition of “Obéissons, quand leur voix appelle” from “Manon.”
The jury of this year’s edition included Dorian Cox, Roberto Mauro, Liz Upchurch, Elaine Overholt, and Edith Wiens.
