The Arena di Verona has announced a cast change for its production of Bizet’s “Carmen.”

The company said that on July 26, Roberto Alagna will step in as Don José in Carmen.

Alagna is well-known for his interpretation of the role, having performed it to great acclaim at the Metropolitan Opera, Paris Opera, and Gran Teatre del Liceu, among others. Alagna is also set to perform in Verdi’s “Aida” in Verona alongside Aleksandra Kurzak, who will make her role debut in the title role.

Alagna will join a cast that includes Alisa Kolosova, Mariangela Sicilia, and Luca Micheletti. Francesco Ivan Ciampa conducts the Franco Zefferelli production.

“Carmen” runs through Sept. 3, 2025.
