Arena di Verona Announces Cast Change for ‘Aida’

The Arena di Verona has announced a cast change for its production of Verdi’s “Aida.”

The company noted that the Veronese baritone Simone Piazzola will sing the role of Amonasro replacing Roman Burdenko who is ill.

Piazzola is a well-known baritone who has performed at the Teatro alla Scala, Royal Opera House, Opéra de Paris, Berlin State Opera, Teatro La Fenice, Semperoper Dresden, and Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía. He is well known for his Verdi repertoire and his Puccini as well as his work in the verismo repertoire.

The baritone joins a cast that includes Sava Vemić, Ekaterina Semenchuk, Liudmyla Monastyrska, Yusif Eyvazov, Ferruccio Furlanetto, and Carlo Bosi. Daniel Oren conducts the production by Franco Zeffirelli.

Burdenko returns to the stage for Verdi’s “Nabucco” on July 7.
