The Dominick Argento Chamber Opera Competition announced the opening of its 2023-24 application.

The two-year chamber opera competition is designed for new works to be performed in college, university, conservatories, and young artist programs.

In the first year, composers submit scores, and from there three finalists are chosen to have excerpts from those operas presented at the National Opera Association conference in Tempe, AZ, in Jan. 2024. The winning opera will then be produced in its entirety at the conference the following year.

There are no age or nationality requirements. Compositions must be in English and no more than 60 minutes long with no more than 20 orchestra members. The application is due on May 1.

Last year’s winner was the composer Tawnie Olson and librettist Roberta Barker team with “Sanctuary and Storm.”
