Lauren Snouffer, Mark Stone, and Anthony Roth Costanzo are set to star in the Philadelphia premiere of George Benjamin’s “Written on Skin.”

Opera Philadelphia will present the first American new staging of the work since its world premiere in 2012. The opera is considered by many as one of the “century’s most successful new operas” and this season the work will be directed by Will Kerley at the Academy of Music.

The work received its world premiere in 2012 at the Festival d’Aix en Provence and has since played with such companies as the Royal Opera House. It was also recognized with the inaugural International Opera Award.

Director Kerley, who recently directed Thomas Adès’s “Powder Her Face” for Opera Philadelphia, noted, “I believe ‘Written on Skin’ is a modern masterpiece. The score and libretto represent an extraordinary conjunction of supreme musicality and innovative theatricality: music and theatre conspiring to create something far greater than the sum of their parts. I love the piece because it demonstrates that combustible mixture of spontaneity and discipline that is evident in any outstanding work of art.”

“Written on Skin” will get a total of four performances in February.
