On June 27, 2025, Oper Köln will present the world premiere of “Die letzten Tage der Menschheit” by Philippe Manoury after Karl Kraus.

The new work is an adaptation of Viennese satirist and polemicist Karl Kraus’s “Die letzten Tage der Menschheit,” an extremely extensive tragedy that describes a world plunged into a devastating war in which it loses its humanity and is doomed to destruction.

The adaptation was commissioned by Oper Köln and written by composer Philippe Manoury together with director Nicolas Stemann and dramaturge Patrick Hahn.

The resulting ‘Thinkspiel’ consists of two large parts for vocal soloists, actors, choir, orchestra, and live electronics.

Peter Rundel will conduct the production by Nicolas Stemann, and the work will star legendary mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter. The Choir of the Cologne Opera and the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne will also perform.

Performances will take place through July 9, 2025.
