The Royal Opera House has announced that it will kick off its 2021 slate with a revival of Puccini’s “Tosca.”

The famed opera, which will be presented in a production by Jonathan Kent, will star sopranos Anna Netrebko, Malin Byström, Saioa Hernández in the title role.

Netrebko will perform alongside tenor Yusif Eyvazov and bass-baritone Gerald Finley under the baton of Dan Ettinger. Her performances start on Jan. 13 and run through the 22, a total of four showcases. The final performance will be live streamed for audiences around the world.

Hernández will lead a cast that includes Yonghoon Lee and Kostas Smoriginas on Jan. 15, 18, 21, 23 (also four performances). Ettinger will conduct her run.

The opera will then return in March for four final performances between March 4-13. Byström will headline this cast, which will also include Freddie De Tommaso and Michael Volle. Alexander Soddy conducts this run of performances.

“What better way for the Royal Opera House and our beloved audience to return to full-scale opera than with Puccini’s masterpiece? Gripping theatre from beginning to end, Tosca also features some of the most passionate music in the repertory, performed here by a dazzling collection of local and international stars. Classic opera at Covent Garden is back,” Oliver Mears, Director of Opera of the Royal Opera House, said in an official press release.

To comply with COVID-19 regulations, the company will enforce social distancing guidelines throughout the rehearsal process and will change the staging to ensure the safety of artists. The orchestra will also be smaller than usual.
