Anna Netrebko, Roberto Alagna & Juan Diego Flórez Highlight Gran Teatre Del Liceu’s 2019-20 Season

The Gran Teatre del Liceu has announced its 2019-20 season with numerous new productions, revivals, rarely performed works and concerts by some of the biggest stars in the world.

Franc Aleu makes his operatic debut directing a new production of Puccini’s “Turandot” with Irene Theorin in the title role alongside Jorge de Leon and Ermonela Jaho as Liù. Lise Linstrom headlines the second cast with Anita Hartig and Gregory Kunde. Josep Pons conducts Puccini’s final opera.

Performance Dates: Oct. 7-25, 2019

Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazov make their Liceu debuts in a concert of favorite arias and duets. Denis Vlasenko conducts.

Performance Date: Nov. 4, 2019

María José Moreno and Elena Sancho Pereg trade-off as the title role in Vives’ zarzuela “Doña Francisquita.” They are joined by Celso Albelo and Airam Hernandez as Fernando. Carlos Chausson and María José Suarez round out the cast with Oliver Diaz conducting the production Lluís Pasqual.

Performance Dates: Nov. 10-17, 2019

Roberto Alagna sings the double bill of “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci” with a cast that also includes Elena Pankratova and Aleksandra Kurzak. Fabio Sartori also sings in the production by Damiano Michieletto.

Performance Dates: Dec. 5-22, 2019

Angela Meade makes her Liceu debut in the title role of Verdi’s “Aida” alongside Yonghoon Lee and Clémentine Margaine. Kwangchul Youn and Marco Vratogna round out the first cast. The second cast is led by Anna Pirozzi and Judit Kutasi with Luciano Ganci as Radamès. Marko Mimica and Franco Vassallo round out the second cast with Gustavo Gimeno conducting.

Javier Camarena returns to the Liceu in a recital with Angela Rodriguez performing on piano.

Performance Date: Jan. 18, 2020

The Liceu will present the Francisco Viñas Competition, showcasing the next generation of opera singers.

Performance Dates: Jan. 24-26, 2020

Paolo Fanale and Dovlet Nurgeldiyev share the title role of Mozart’s “La Clemenza di Tito” with Myrtò Papatanasiu, Vanessa Goikoetxea, and Carmela Remigio alternating as Vitellia. Anne-Catherine Gillet and Sara Blanch are Servilia while Stéphanie D’Oustrac and Maite Beaumont share the role of Sesto.

Performance Dates: Feb. 19-27, 2020 & April 17-29, 2020

Chen Reiss sings Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 with Josep Pons conducting the monumental score.

Performance Date: March 1, 2020

Katharina Wagner directs a new production of Wagner’s “Lohengrin” with Klaus Florian Vogt in the title role and Erin Wall as Elsa. Evelyn Herlitzius, Roman Trekel, and Günther Groissböck round out the cast with Josep Pons conducting.

Performance Dates: March 19-April 5, 2020

Joyce DiDonato sings the title role of Rossini’s “Semiramide” in a concert version, which also stars Levy Sekapagne, Teresa Iervolino, and Alex Esposito. Paolo Arrivabeni conducts. 

Performance Dates: April 30-May 3, 2020

Juan Diego Flórez delights Barcelona audiences in a concert of French and Mozart arias with Jader Bignamini conducting.

Performance Date: May 21, 2020 

Marin Marais’ “Alcione” gets a production with Louise Moaty directing the new production. Marianne Beate Kielland sings the title role with Cyril Auvity and Marc Mauillon rounding out the cast.

Performance Dates: May 16-23, 2020  

Anita Rachvelishvili, Varduhi Abrahamyan, and Clémentine Margaine bring the title role of Bizet’s “Carmen” with Leonardo Capalbo and Charles Castronovo as Don José. Simón Orfila and Eric Green sing Escamillo while Maria Miró and Jeanine de Bique alternate as Michaëla. Patrick Summers conducts.

Performance Dates: June 8-22, 2020

Josef Ernst Köpplinger directs a new production of Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” with Maxim Mironov and Levy Sekapagne as the Count and Paola Gardina and Marina Viotti sharing the role of Rosina. Giorgio Caoduro and Florian Sempey share the title role with Manuel López-Gómez conducting.

Performance Dates: July 21-August 2, 2020
