Happy 2021!

As we settle into this New Year, this week’s streams will feature a host of celebratory concerts from around the world as well as some productions of opera favorites from some of the most renowned companies in the world.

New Year’s Recital – Istituto Italiano di Cultura Hong Kong (NOW)

Kick off the first week of the New Year with this concert from the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Hong Kong featuring soprano Etta Fung, mezzo-soprano Samantha Chong, and piano Wei-en Hsu as they take on solos and duets from opera, song, and film by Scarlatti, Caccini, Bellini, Donizetti, Tosti, Morricone, Rota and Piovani.

Concero di San Silvestro – Wellber – Teatro Massimo (NOW)

Relive this New Year’s concert featuring soprano Carmen Giannattasio and baritone Markus Werba. The concert featured music by Haydn, Mozart, Verdi, Wagner, Spontini, Lehar, Le Gaz Spoliansky, and De Curtis.

Die Fledermaus – Oper Frankfurt (NOW)

Oper Frankfurt showcases the famed operetta with a cast featuring Christian Gerhaher in the role of Gabriel von Eisenstein, alongside Barbara Zechmeister as Rosalinde, Thorsten Grümbel as Frank, Martin Wölfel in the roles of Prinz Orlofsky / Frosch, Stephan Rügamer as Alfred, Michael Nagy as Dr. Falke, Hans-Jürgen Lazar as Dr. Blind, Britta Stallmeister in the role of Adele, and Andrea M. Dewell as Ida.

Semele – OperaVision / Komische Oper Berlin (NOW)

OperaVision will showcase Barrie Kosky’s production of Handel’s operatic masterpiece “Semele” from the Komische Oper Berlin. The opera features Katarina Bradić in the role of Ino; Eric Jurenas as Athamas, Prince of Bœotia; Allan Clayton in the role of Jupiter, King of the Gods; Ezgi Kutlu as Juno; Philipp Meierhöfer as Cadmus, King of Thebes; Nora Friedrichs as Iris; Evan Hughes as Somnus, God of sleep/Priest; and Nicole Chevalier in the title role.

Hänsel und Gretel – Bayerische Staatsoper (NOW)

The Bayerische Staatsoper presents Humperdinck’s masterpiece in a production starring a superstar cast that includes Tara Erraught as Hänsel and Emily Pogoreic as Gretel. Okka von der Damerau takes on the role of Gertrud with Milan Siljanov interprets Peter.

The Making of Snowy Day – Houston Grand Opera (NOW – Jan. 9)

The Houston Grand Opera streams a documentary showcasing the making of Joel Thompson and Andrea Davis Pinkney’s opera based on the book by Ezra Jack Keats. The opera has yet to world premiere, but this documentary will give audiences a chance to see what the company has in store for this unique work.

Adriana Lecouvreur – Metropolitan Opera (Jan. 4)

Arguably one of the finest Live in HD broadcasts in recent Met history, Anna Netrebko takes on the title role in what was deemed a major triumph for the diva. But she’s not the only one. Anita Rachvelishvili and Piotr Beczala also deliver historic turns with Ambrogio Maestri also a highlight. In all, this is a fantastic presentation of a verismo gem.

Markus Werba in Recital – Teatro alla Scala (Jan. 4)

The Teatro alla Scala kicks off its 2021 streaming slate with a recital featuring baritone Markus Werba accompanied by Michele Gamba. The duo will present a program dedicated to the music of Robert Schumann.

Aida – Gran Théâtre de Genève / Mezzo.TV (Jan. 6)

Mezzo.TV will stream Verdi’s “Aida” in a production from Geneva starring Serena Farnocchia, Yonghoon Lee, Marina Prudenskaya, Alexey Markov, Donald Thomson, and Liang Li. Antonino Fogliani conducts.

Thomas Hampson Curtain Call – Opernhaus Zürich (Jan. 9)

The Opernhaus Zürich continues its unique concert series, this time featuring baritone Thomas Hampson. The famed baritone works with young artists from the International Opera Studio in scenes from “Così Fan Tutte” as well as music by Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, and Schubert. Artists include Savelii Andreev, Erica Petrocelli, Siena Licht Miller, Luca Bernard, Luis Magallanes, Yannick Debus, and Andrew Moore.
