Anna Netrebko & Michele Angelini Highlight Lead Top 6 Operas To See This Weekend Internationally (8/30-9/1)

This weekend is filled with a number of classic works from the baroque era and classical period. There is also a highly anticipated Ring Cycle and the return of a one of the most celebrated singers of our time. Here is a look at what we recommend for the weekend.

L’Incoronazione di Poppea – Teatro Colón, Argentina

Verónica Cangemi sings the title role in Monteverdi’s masterpiece alongside a cast that includes Raffaele Pe, Luigi De Donato, Josè Maria Lo Monaco, Filippo Mineccia, Mariana Flores, and Emilie Rose Bry.

The work, which is set for a concert performance will be conducted by Jean-Christophe Spinosi.

Rodelinda – Teatro Municipal de Santiago, Chile 

Sabina Puértolas and Xavier Sabata star in Handel’s rarely performed work. The production by Jean Bellorini also stars Santiago Bürgi, Gaia Petrone, Christopher Ainslie, Javier Arrey, and María Prudencio. Philipp Ahmann conducts.

Das Rhiengold – Finnish National Opera, Finland 

Esa Pekka-Salonen leads his first Ring Cycle in a highly anticipated new production by Anna Kelo.

Tommi Hakala makes his role debut as Wotan alongside Lilli Paasikivi, Tuomas Katajala, Reetta Haavisto, Tuomas Pursio, Markus Nykänen, Jukka Rasilainen, Dan Karlström, Jyrki Korhonen, Koit Soasepp, Sari Nordqvist, Marjukka Tepponen, Mari Palo, and Jeni Packalen.

Macbeth – Pathos Aphrodite Festival, Greece 

Verdi’s masterpiece “Macbeth” is set to headline the festival performed at the square of the Medieval Castle in Pafos in a production by the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre of Belarus.

The cast includes Stanislav Trifonov and Ekaterina Golovleva as the villainous Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, Andrei Valentii as Banquo and Aleksey Mikutel as Macduff.  Viktor Ploskina conducts.

Anna Netrebko & Yusif Eyvazov in Concert – Congress Center, Russia

Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazov return to the stage after high profile cancelations. They sing a gala concert at the Congress Center in Ekaterinburg in a program of operatic favorites with frequen collaborator Jader Biganmini.

La Cenerentola – Royal Swedish Opera, Sweden 

Michele Angelini stars in Rossini’s comic masterpiece alongside a star-studded cast that includes Dara Savinova in the title role, Marianne Odencrants, Francine Vis, Jens Persson, John Erik Eleby, and Markus Schwartz.

Ramón Tebar conducts the work in a production by Katarina Aronsson.
