The Wiener Staatsoper has announced its 2024-25 season.

Premieres

Philippe Jordan conducts Verdi’s “Don Carlo” in a new production by Kirill Serebrennikov. The production stars Asmik Grigorian, Roberto Tagliavini, Joshua Guerrero, Étienne Dupuis, Eve-Maud Hubeaux, and Dmitry Ulyanov. The second cast will include Nicole Car, Elīna Garanča, and Vitalij Kowaljow.

Performance Dates: Sept. 26, 2024-March 23, 2025

György Kurtág’s “Fin de Partie” will be conducted by Simone Young and directed by Herbert Fritsch. The production will star Charles Workman, Hilary Summers, Philippe Sly, and Georg Nigl.

Performance Dates: Oct. 16-29, 2024

Two casts make up the new production of Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte.” The first will star Georg Zeppenfeld, Julian Prégardien, Jochen Schmeckenbecher, Serena Sáenz, Slávka Zámečníková, and Ludwig Mittelhammer. The second cast is led by Franz-Josef Selig, Cyrille Dubois, Clemens Unterreiner, Maria Nazarova, Sáenz, and Mittelhammer. Barbora Horáková directs the new production and Franz Welser-Möst and Adam Fischer alternate at the pit.

Performance Dates: Jan. 27-May 5, 2025

Bellini’s “Norma” is set to star Federica Lombardi, Juan Diego Flórez, Ildebrando d’Arcangelo, and Vasilisa Berzhanskaya. Michele Mariotti conducts the new production by Cyril Teste. A second cast will include Lidia Fridman and Freddie de Tommaso conducted by Antonino Figliani.

Tugan Sokhiev leads Tchaikovsky’s “Iolanta” with Sonya Yoncheva in the title role. Evgeny Titov directs the new production which will also star Ivo Stanchev, Boris Pinkhasovich, and Dmytro Popov.

Performance Dates: March 24-April 6, 2025

Wagner’s “Tannhäuser” will be conducted by Philippe Jordan and directed by Lydia Steier. Clay Hilley, Ekaterina Gubanova, Malin Byström, Ludovic Tézier, and Günther Groissböck.

Performance Dates: May 22-June 4, 2025

Repertoire

The season opens with Bizet’s “Carmen,” which will feature two casts. The first cast will be led by Aigul Akhmetshina, Vittorio Grigolo, Erwin Schrott, and Elsa Dreisig. Pier Giorgio Morandi conducts. The second cast will star J’Nai Bridges, Freddie de Tommaso, Christopher Maltman, and Florina Ilie. Marco Armiliato conducts.

Lisette Oropesa leads Verdi’s “La Traviata” with Juan Diego Flórez and Ludovic Tézier. Domingo Hindoyan conducts.

Gounod’s “Roméo et Juliette” will showcase two casts. Bertrand de Billy leads the first cast starring Nadine Sierra, Saimir Pirgu, Patricia Nolz, Daniel Jenz, and Peter Kellner. The second will star Aida Garifullina, Benjamin Bernheim, Nolz, Stefan Astakhov, and Kellner.

Performance Dates: Sept. 8-17, 2024 & May 6-13, 2025

Strauss‘ “Salome” will be showcased with two casts. Philippe Jordan leads the first one which will star Simone Schneider, Monika Bohinec, Tomasz Konieczny, Matthäus Schmidlechner, and Daniel Jenz. Yoel Gamzou conducts the second cast which includes Jennifer Holloway, Konieczny, Stephanie Houtzeel, Jörg Schneider, and Hiroshi Amako.

Performance Dates: Sept. 21-25, 2024 & April 5-10, 2025

Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” will be revived twice during the season. Ivor Bolton conducts the first cast starring Andrè Schuen, Slávka Zámečníková, Peter Kellner, Isabel Signoret, and Hanna-Elisabeth Müller. Philippe Jordan conducts the cast that includes Leonard Neiva, Müller, Zámečníková, Philippe Sly, and Patricia Nolz.

Performance Dates: Sept. 22-28, 2024 & March 29-April 2, 2025

Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” will also get two casts. Pablo Heras-Casado will conduct a cast that includes Davide Luciano, Ante Jerkunica, Louise Alder, Bogdan Volkov, Nicole Car, Peter Kellner, Patricia Nolz, and Ilja Kazakov. The second cast will be led by Philippe Jordan and will star Étienne Dupuis, Jerkunica, Alder Edgardo Rocha, Emily D’Angelo, Kellner, Isabel Signoret, and Kazakov.

Axel Kober conducts Verdi’s “Macbeth” with Gerald Finley, Ekaterina Semenchuk, Roberto Tagliavini, and Saimir Pirgu.

Performance Dates: Oct. 12-21, 2024 

Mozart’s “Così fan tutte” closes the Da Ponte trilogy with two casts. Adam Fischer conducts the first which will star Nicole Car, Cecilia Molinari, Markus Werba, Bogdan Volkov, Maria Nazarova, and Luca Pisaroni. Philippe Jordan conducts the second cast which stars Louise Alder, Emily D’Angelo, Peter Kellner, Edgard Rocha, Isabel Signoret, and Pisaroni.

Performance Dates: Oct. 18-27, 2024 & March 30-April 3, 2025

Benjamin Britten’s “Billy Budd” returns to Vienna with a star cast that includes Gregory Kunde, Huw Montague Rendall, Brindley Sherratt, Wolfgang Bankl, Attila Mokus, and Adrian Eröd. Mark Wigglesworth conducts.

Giedrė Šlekytė conducts Puccini’s “La bohème” with Saimir Pirgu, Elbenita Kajtazi, Leonard Neiva, Martin Häßler, Ilja Kazakov, and Anna Bondarenko. Lorenzo Passerini conducts the second cast which stars Liparit Avetisyan, Ailyn Pérez, Clemens Unterreiner, Häßler, Peter Kellner, and Maria Nazarova.

Puccini’s “Tosca” will star three casts. The first includes Lise Davidsen, Freddie de Tommaso, and Alexey Markov while the second will star Sonya Yoncheva, Ambrogio Maestri, and Piotr Beczała. The third cast will see Aleksandra Kurzak, Roberto Alagna, and Gabriele Viviani. Pier Giorgio Morandi and Marco Armiliato conduct.
