By David Salazar

The Hungarian State Opera has announced its 143rd season, featuring 10 new productions, 500 performances across its two venues, and a landmark Kodály centenary celebration. Here is a look at the operatic offerings.

New Productions

The season opens with a world premiere of “Kodály Háry Jancsika,” a new children’s version of the beloved singspiel performed by the OPERA Children’s Chorus, conducted by Nikolett Hajzer and directed by Mária Harangi.

Performance Dates: Sept. 19 – Oct. 10, 2026

The centenary new production of Kodály’s “Háry János” — marking 100 years since the opera’s 1926 world premiere — is conducted by Péter Halász and directed by Attila Béres. Csaba Sándor sings the title role opposite Gabriella Balga as Örzse.

Performance Dates: Oct. 17 – 25, 2026

Tamás Novák’s documentary-drama double bill “Kádár’s Record” / “The Last Speech of Kádár “ pairs a new pseudo-documentary film with a reimagined staging of Novák’s chamber drama about Hungary’s former Communist leader — incorporating Schönberg’s “Ode to Napoleon” — marking the 70th anniversary of the 1956 revolution. The production moves from the Opera House basement to the full Bánffy Stage at the Eiffel Art Studios. Performers include  János Bán, Bálint Bán, Zsolt Trill, and Zoltán Bezerédi.

Performance Dates: Oct. 22 – Nov. 1, 2026
