The Wiener Staatsoper has announced its 2026-27 season.

Premiere

Zem­lins­ky’s “Eine Florentinische Tragödie” and Bartok’s “Bluebeard’s Castle” will be performed in a new production with Dmitry Golovnin, Christopher Maltman, Florian Boesch, and Asmik Grigorian. Alain Altinoglu conducts the new production by Vasily Barkhatov. 

Performance Dates: Oct. 3-12, 2026


Barrie Kosky directs a new production of Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos” with Franz Welser-Möst and Asher Fisch conducting.

Two casts will headline. The first will include Michael Nagy, Kate Lindsey, Daniel Behle, Serena Sáenz, Golda Schultz, and Jusung Gabriel Park. The second cast will showcase Adrian Eröd and Christina Nilsson.

Performance Dates: Nov. 22, 2026-April 24, 2027


Eve-Maud Hubeaux, John Osborn, and Christian Van Horn star in Berlioz’s “La Damnation de Faust.” Bertrand de Billy conducts the new production by Lydia Steier.

Freddie De Tommaso, Luca Salsi, Marina Rebeka, Marie-Nicole Lemieux and Ilia Staple lead the first cast of Verdi’s “Un Ballo in Maschera” in Nikolaus Habjan’s new production. Anna Netrebko, Elizabeth DeShong, and Marina Monzó join the cast in the summer. 

Performance Dates: Feb. 21-June 26, 2027


Alexander Soddy conducts a new production of Tchaikovsky’s “Pique Dame” with Evgeny Titov directing. The cast includes Ivan Gyngazov, Boris Pinkhasovich, Andrey Zhilikhovsky, Violeta Urmana, and Elena Stikhina.

Performance Dates: March 15-27, 2027


Lisette Oropesa and Emily D’Angelo star in Bellini’s “I Capuletti e I Montecchi” with Iván Ayon Rivas, and Marko Mimica. Gianluca Capuano conducts the new production by Tatjana Gürbaca.

Mozart’s “Die Entführung aus dem Serail” will star Nikola Hillebrand, Katharina Pichler, Ilia Staple, Stella Roberts, Stefan Cerny, Sebastian Kohlhepp, and Christian Natter. Constantin Trinks conducts.

J. Strauss‘ “Die Fledermaus” will star Ludwig Mittelhammer, Julia Kleiter, Alexander Grassauer, Patricia Nolz, Jörg Schneider, Adrian Eröd, Nikola Hillebrand, and Michael Niavarani. Franz Welser-Möst conducts.

Performance Dates: Dec. 31, 2026-Jan. 6, 2027


Michael Volle, Christof Fischesser, Michael Nagy, Eric Cutler, Daniel Jenz, Hanna-Elisabeth Müller star in Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.” Axel Kober conducts.

Korngold’s “Die Tote Stadt” will star Klaus Florian Vogt, Vida Mikneviciute, and Andrè Schuen. Sebastian Weigle conducts.

Smetana’s “The Bartered Bride (Die verkaufte Braut)” will be conducted by Tomáš Hanus and will star Bartosz Urbanowicz, Margaret Plummer, Olga Bezsmertna, Hans Peter Kammerer, Monika Bohinec, Pavel Černoch, Matthäus Schmidlechner, and Peter Kellner.

Performance Dates: Jan. 8-16, 2027


Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” will be revived twice. The first cast will include Günther Groissböck, Magnus Dietrich, Clemens Unterreiner, Sabine Devieilhe, Slávka Zámečníková, and Georg Nigl. The second cast will star Stefan Cerny, Pavol Breslik, Adrian Eröd, Aleksandra Olczyk, Nikola Hillebrand and Michael Nagl. Sebastian Weigle and Axel Kober conduct.

Then in the spring Dave Monaco, Marco Filippo Romano, Maria Kataeva, Erwin Schrott, and Nicola Alaimo star with Antonino Fogliani conducting.

Donizetti’s “L’Elisir d’Amore” returns with two casts. The first will star Emily Pogorelc, Bogdan Volkov, and Ambrogio Maestri with Leonardo Sini conducting while the second will star Pretty Yende, Xabier Anduaga, Leonardo Neiva, and Peter Kálmán with Antonino Fogliani conducting.
