Anna Netrebko, Diana Damrau & Gaёlle Arquez Lead New Year’s Eve Performances!

New Year’s Eve is a night of non-stopped celebration. It is a night often associated with fireworks, champagne, and time spent with loved ones. It is also a night of opera galas, with many companies around the world showcasing top talents for the last time in the calendar year. As such, OperaWire has compiled a list of six performances that will make your New Year’s Eve unforgettable.

Wiener Staatsoper, Austria

The Vienna State celebrates the New Year with its annual run of J.Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” with a cast that includes Adrian Eröd, Laura Aikin, Jochen Schmeckenbecher, Margarita Gritskova, Benjamin Bruns, Clemens Unterreiner, Daniela Fally, Peter Simonischek, Peter Jelosits, and Valeriia Savinskaia.

Nicholas Carter conducts Otto Schenk’s classic production which is expected to have surprise guests.

Metropolitan Opera, New York

Anna Netrebko leads the Metropolitan Opera’s  New Year’s gala  performing three acts from some of Puccini’s iconic works.

First she returns to Mimì in the first act of “La Bohème” and then she sings the first act of her acclaimed portrayal of “Tosca,” a role with which she recently opened the Teatro alla Scala’s 2019-20 season.

Finally she sings her first “Turandot.” She will be joined by Matthew Polenzani, Yusif Eyvazov, Davide Luciano, Quinn Kelsey, Evgeny Nikitin and Christian Van Horn. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts.

Gewandhaus Leipzig, Germany

Daniele Gatti leads the Chor der Oper Leipzig, GewandhausChor, GewandhausKinderchor, Olga Peretyatko, Natascha Petrinsky, Pavel Černoch, and Matthias Goerne in Beethoven’s monumental Ninth Symphony.

The three performances will ring in the New Year in what should be an unforgettable night.

Festival Hall Baden Baden, Germany

The Baden Baden Festpiele rings in the New Year with a gala entitled Spanish Night. Gaёlle Arquez and Joel Prieto join conductor Thomas Guggeis and the Wiener KammerOrchester in an evening of Spanish zarzuela music and highlights from the opera Bizet’s “Carmen” including the Habanera, Don Jose’s “Flower Song,” and the magnificent final duet “Si tu m’aimes, Carmen.”

Berlin Philharmonic, Germany

The Silvesterkonzert is set to feature Kirill Petrenko conducting the Berlin Philharmonic with Diana Damrau making her debut with the orchestra. The program will feature music by Sondheim, Kurt Weill, Leonard Bernstein, Harold Arlen and Gershwin.

Staatskapelle Dresden, Germany

Christian Thielemann leads the annual New Year’s Eve Silverkonzert in Lehár’s “Das Land des Lächelns.” The cast is set to include Jane Archibald, Pavol Breslik, Erin Morley, and Sebastian Kohlhepp in the concert performance. Like every year the gala will be recorded on ZDF for later transmission.
