Anna Netrebko, Cecilia Bartoli & Plácido Domingo To Headline Salzburg Festival’s 2020 Season

The Salzburg Festival has announced its 2020 season celebrating its 100th anniversary with a number of operatic productions from many repertory staples and numerous rarely performed gems. Here is a look at the operatic works to be performed.

Opera

Franz Welser-Möst is set to conduct a new production of R. Strauss’ “Elektra” with Krzysztof Warlikowski. Aušrine Stundyte sings the title role with Tanja Ariane Baumgartner as Klytämnestr, Asmik Grigorian as Chrysothemis, Michael Laurenz as Aegisth, and Derek Welton as Orest.

Performance Dates: July 27 – August 24, 2020

Davide Luciano sings the title role of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” with Mika Kares as Il Commendatore, Nadezhda Pavlova as Donna Anna,  Michael Spyres as Don Ottavio, Federica Lombardi as Donna Elvira, Vito Priante as Leporello, David Steffens as Masetto, and Anna Lucia Richter as Zerlina.

The production by Romeo Castellucci is conducted by Mozart specialist Teodor Currentzis.

Performance Dates: July 28 – August 24, 2020

Anna Netrebko sings the title role in Puccini’s “Tosca” alongside Yusif Eyvazov and Ludovic Tézier. The new production is directed by Michael Sturminger and conducted by Marco Armiliato.

Performance Dates: August 2 – 13, 2020

Joana Mallwitz conducts Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” in a production by Lydia Steier. The cast includes Tareq Nazmi, Mauro Peter, Brenda Rae,  Regula Mühlemann, and Adam Plachetka.

Performance Dates: August 3 – 29, 2020

Luigi Nono’s “Intolleranza 1960” is set to be conducted by Ingo Metzmacher with Jan Lauwers directing. Sean Panikkar heads the cast with Sarah Maria Sun, Anna Maria Chiuri ,Sung-Im Her, Yonier Camilo Mejia, and Victor Lauwers.

Performance Dates: August 9 – 27, 2020

Cecilia Bartoli and Javier Camarena headline a production of Donizetti’s “Don Pasuqale” with Peter Kálmán in the title role and Nicola Alaimo Dottor Malatesta. Gianluca Capuano conducts the production by Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier.

Performance Dates: August 9 – 18, 2020

Ildar Abdrazakov sings the title role in Mussorgsky’s “Boris Godunow” with Yulia Mazurova, Irina Chistiakova, Dmitry Golovnin, Andrei Kymach, Dmitry Ulyanov, Pavel Cernoch, Agunda Kulaeva, Āukasz Goliăski, Stanislav Trofimov, Alexander Kravets, Maria Barakova, and Bogdan Volkov. Mariss Jansons conducts Christof Loy’s production.

Performance Dates: August 20 – 28, 2020

Daniele Rustioni conducts Verdi’s “I Vespri Siciliani” with Plácido Domingo headlining the cast in a concert performance. The opera will also star Fabio Sartori, Mika Kares, and Rachel Willis-Sørensen.

Performance Dates: August 16 & 19, 2020

Morton Feldman’s “Neither” will be shown with Ilan Volkov conducting soprano Sarah Aristidou with the Minguet Quartett.

Performance Date: August 7, 2020

Marc Minkowski conducts a production of Handel’s “Messiah” with Robert Wilson directing. The cast will include Elena Tsallagova, Lucile Richardot, Richard Croft, and José Coca Loza.

Performance Dates: July 24-26, 2020
