Anna Caterina Antonacci, Marina Rebeka & Ramon Vargas Headline Grand Théâtre de Genève’s 2018-19 Season

The Grand Théâtre de Genève has announced its 2018-19 season featuring a number of rarely performed works as well as the Ring Cycle.

Here is a look at what this season will offer.

Productions

The season opens with Bizet’s “Carmen” starring Ekaterina Sergeeva and Héloïse Mas alternating the title role.  Sébastien Guèze and Sergej Khomov share the role of Don José while Ildebrando D’Arcangelo and Adriana Gonzalez round out the cast. John Fiore conducts Reinhild Hoffmann’s production.

Performance Dates: Sept. 10-27, 2018

Johann Christoph Pepusch’s “The Beggar’s Opera” stars Robert Burt, Beverley Klein, Kate Batter, Benjamin Purkiss, among others in a new production by Robert Carsen. The new version by Ian Burton and Robert Carsen will showcase a new musical conception by William Christie.

Performance Dates: Oct. 3-7, 2018

Mikhail Petrenko and Alexey Tikhomirov share the title role in Mussorgsky’s “Boris Godunov” with Paolo Arrivabeni conducting. Melody Louledjian, Vitalij Kowaljow, Roman Burdenko, and Marina Viotti also star.

Performance Dates: Oct. 28-Nov. 15, 2018

Donizetti’s “Viva La Mama” makes a rare appearance on stage with a new production by Laurent Pelly. Laurent Naouri stars in the lead role with Gergely Madaras conducting.

Performance Dates: Dec. 21, 2018-Jan. 3, 2019

China’s National Peking Opera makes a rare appearance in Geneva with the company’s production of “Faust.”

Performance Dates: Jan. 12-13,2019

Donizetti’s “L’Elisir d’Amore” gets a production from the Teatro alla Scala starring the Orchestra and Soloists of the Teatro alla Scala Academy.

Performance Dates: Jan. 18-20, 2019

Anna-Caterina Antonacci takes the title role in Charpentier’s “Médée” in a new production by David McVicar. Leonardo García Alarcón conducts.

Performance Dates: April 30-May 11, 2019

Marina Rebeka makes her role debut in Bellini’s “Il Pirata” in a concert performance also starring Franco Vassallo and Michael Spyres.

Performance Dates: Feb. 22-24, 2019

Giancarlo del Monaco directs a new production of Verdi’s “Un Ballo in Maschera” with Ramón Vargas, Franco Vassallo, Irina Churilova, and Judit Kutasi.

Performance Dates: June 4-22, 2019

Recitals

Piotr Beczala, Sarah Connolly, Patricia Petibon, Christian Gerhaher, and Luca Pisaroni all showcase recitals. There will also a recital featuring Anke Vondung, Marlis Petersen, Werner Güra, and Paul Armin Edelmann.

The Ring Cycle 

Dieter Dorn and Jürgen Rose’s production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle returns with Georg Fritzsch conducting three cycles. The distinguished cast includes Stephan Rügamer, Aleksey Tikhomirov, Taras Shtonda, Christoph Strehl, Stephan Genz, Jennifer Larmore, Agneta Eichenholz, Polina Pasztircsák, Petra Lang, Will Hartmann, Michaela Kaune, Tómas Tómasson, Aleksey Tikhomirov, Taras Shtonda, and Edith Haller.

Performance Dates: Feb. 12-March 17, 2019
